ABSOLUTE ADVANTAGE: “The CHIP Prescription for Health”

THE “CHIP” PRESCRIPTION

By Dr. Hans Diehl

The Good Life is killing us: diabetes rates are up 700% since WW2, breast cancer rates have tripled since 1960, and manufacturers have to super-size everything from shirts to pants and from gurneys to coffins to accommodate the enlarging American population. With 70% of all deaths now being attributed to poor lifestyle choices, and with health care costs consuming large portions of corporate profits, we are reaching the breaking point. But hope is on the way, because there is CHIP.

By teaching people to make simple lifestyle choices to prevent, arrest and reverse many of today's diseases, the Coronary Health Improvement Project—with more than 40,000 graduates and with solid, published research—offers communities a chance to pursue not the good life but the "best life." This appealing prospect will receive an unprecedented boost in the months to come through the magazine that you hold in your hand.

The Wellness Councils of America (WELCOA), a national clearing house for corporate health promotion programs, challenged us to join them in highlighting the CHIP program in their current Absolute Advantage magazine. Being sent to more than 4,000 thought leaders and executives of Fortune 500 companies, this current issue has the potential of catapulting the CHIP program and its underlining lifestyle medicine principles into national recognition.

As you take time to read through this special issue, you will see the emergence of a new paradigm that will eventually cascade across the nation as enthusiastic corporations, churches, schools and people everywhere begin to take these principles to heart. You will understand the importance of taking charge of your own life and health. You will know that only a cultural transformation based on better understanding, a new heightened sense of personal responsibility and mutual support will solve the spiraling ineffectiveness of a health care system that isn't working.

This special issue of Lifeline represents many months of research and planning. We are glad to be able to bring you cutting edge health information that will be discussed, debated, and implemented. These principles will result in better health, lower health care costs, and more happiness.  Read this special issue from cover to cover! Share it with your friends and family. Share it with your church, your employer, and your health care provider. And implement these principles in your own life!
